Two-time Grand Slam champion Mary Pierce retired from her second round match against Vera Zvonareva today at the Generali Ladies Linz because of a knee injury.
Pierce was up by one set 6-4, and was headed into a second-set tiebreak against Zvonareva when she twisted her left knee.
No information is known yet as to the extent of the injury.
Obviously, I hate to see any of the players get injured, but I especially hate to see Mary Pierce once again sitting on the sidelines. She has already battled foot and thigh injuries this season and before this afternoon, it looked like she was finally starting to regain her form.
October 27 UPDATE: The Herald-Tribune is reporting that Mary ruptured a cruciate ligament in her left knee which will require surgery to repair. According to a hospital spokesperson, she will be having treatment back in France.

Awwwww, Mary!!! Darn that’s hard to hear - I feel so bad for her.
I hope the recovery is swift and complete.
