Lindsay Davenport Will Play Tennis in 2007, Postpones Retirement

© Sara Quinnett - Lindsay Davenport
There is good news this morning for Lindsay Davenport fans as the former world number one has decided to postpone her retirement once more and commit to playing professional tennis in the 2007 season.

Charles Bricker at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has written an excellent article on Lindsay that talks about her schedule for next season, her goals of starting a family with husband Jon, and her continued desire to play on the Tour.

She’s not planning to play more than seven or eight tournaments in 2007, including three of the four Grand Slams. But, she said Saturday, she’ll be out there.

After the Australian, her plan is to play Tokyo, then both Indian Wells and Key Biscayne, Wimbledon and perhaps a lead-up to Wimbledon, one tournament before the U.S. Open and then the Open. It’s not much, but for Davenport’s legion of fans, it beats retirement.

As for her plans to compete in the Australian Open, Lindsay said that she will begin training in a couple of weeks for the Grand Slam.

She applied for gold exempt emeritus status according to Lisa Dillman at the Los Angeles Times, and could possibly have the ability next season to enter tournaments as a wildcard. I talked to the WTA a few weeks ago about the list, but it has not yet been published.

    VIVA LINDSAY!

I am one happy fan right now. :) I really couldn’t be more pleased.

I hope we find out soon whether she gets GEE or not soon though. Best of luck Lindsay in 2007. I never thought I’d ever say that.

I am one very happy fan too. A part time Lindsay better than no Lindsay at all. I hope this playing less thing leads to a 4th slam and even if it doesn’t its great Lindsay is playing on. I’m going to miss her when she finally decides to call it a career.

In 2005 Lindsay said she’s be surprised if she was still playing in 2006 and now its nearly 2007 and she still around which is great.

Cheers…. The Tower of Power will be back on court in 07. I had actually anticipated her tournament list if she played in 2007 and these are actually the ones i pressumed she would be playing.

As the genteleman above sais rightly, a part time lindsay is better than no Lindsay.

But, i feel now luck should strike for her as she has always been unlucky when it came to grand slams - she has always given her best and now it is the turn for best to come to her……

GO Lindsay…….. we may not be in the stands but we cheer for you from everywhere!!!!!!

Got this great news this morning, Lindsay is pregnant and expecting a child by summer in May. Cheers to Lindsay & John and as for tennis fans like us, it’s a great news but the sad thing about this is that she will not play aussie open and also skip her favourite INDIAN WELLS. Further to add on, though she has not spoken about retirement, she says she has no plans to play after that.

It remains to be seen if the legend will ever come back on the court or the sun will set for ever on the WTA tour.
