Martina Hingis has scored her first top five victory since March today with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Nadia Petrova at the Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid.
I originally picked Nadia Petrova to score the win in straight sets, but I was more than happy to be proved wrong. Hingis’ comeback has been under scrutiny for much of the fall season and her win today will only serve to boost her confidence and add much-needed credibility to her return to the top ten.
I will admit that her serve continues to be a liability, but her footwork and strategy on court today was reminiscent of the old Hingis that dominated a decade ago. Her victory over Petrova places her on even ground in the round robin, before her last match tomorrow against world number one Amelie Mauresmo.
The last time she defeated a player in the top five was at Indian Wells against Lindsay Davenport.
