Outgoing world number one Amelie Mauresmo kept her hopes alive of defending her 2005 season-ending Championships title today by outlasting a weary Martina Hingis 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in Madrid.
Mauresmo’s chances of ending the season at number one were dashed yesterday, but she refused to let that get in the way of a thrilling performance in her second round robin match.
Tonight’s match in Madrid was Hingis’ third three-set match in just three days and it proved too much for the Swiss Miss. She had enough energy to rout Mauresmo in the opening set in just thirty-seven minutes, but Hingis completely ran out of energy in the second set.
She worked her way back into the match during the third when Mauresmo showed a display of nerves when serving for the match by saving four match points at 5-2.
Two games later, when it looked like Martina had a chance to level the match, she blew a break point for 5-5 and handed Mauresmo the victory 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Hingis’ chances of reaching the semifinals are not completely over, but she will now have to wait and see how well Amelie does in her final rubber tomorrow against Justine Henin-Hardenne, who qualified for the semis earlier today.
