Justine Henin-Hardenne Reaches Madrid Semifinals, Moves Closer to No. 1

Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne has advanced one step closer to capturing the season-ending number one ranking when she defeated Russia’s Nadia Petrova in two sets 6-4, 6-4 at the Sony Ericsson Championships today in Madrid, Spain.

Henin-Hardenne, who is currently at No. 3 in the world, has become the first player to officially qualify for the semifinal round on Saturday. She still has one more round robin match to play against outgoing world number one Amelie Mauresmo, but the match has technically become a “dead rubber” for Henin-Hardenne as her place is guaranteed by her win today.

Current No. 2 Maria Sharapova - Must win title and Justine Henin-Hardenne has to lose in the semifinals
Current No. 3 Justine Henin-Hardenne - Needs to reach the final
