It sounds as if the American contingent at the Australian Open will be at full strength next season as former world number one Venus Williams has announced that she will be returning to competition at Melbourne in January.
Venus, who only played six events in 2006 and is currently ranked at No. 49, announced this morning that she is hoping to be back in time to compete at the first Grand Slam of the 2007 season.
“The wrist is OK, and even if it wasn’t or is (100 percent), the year is over and it’s all about training for next year,” Williams said Saturday at the WTA Championships. “I think January and Melbourne is a good date (to return).”

“I can’t wait to get back on tour. I really miss my job,” Williams said. “It’s my aspiration to be out there hitting balls really, really hard and playing those tough points I really enjoy.”(source: The Ledger Independent)
The other two top American tennis stars, Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams, have already announced their intentions of competing in the tournament. Venus is also expected to play for the United States in the Hopman Cup exhibition in early January.
