Well, folks, it’s finally over! The 2006 season on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has ended and is in the statistic books. And what a year it was! Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin-Hardenne, and Maria Sharapova proved to us on multiple occasions that they are the players to beat, and we can only look forward to seeing them hoist more trophies in 2007.

Today marks the start of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour off-season. For the next six weeks, all of the players (at least the ones not jetting back and forth for exhibitions) will be resting up, enjoying a much-needed vacation, training, and getting ready for a new season. For some, it will be a chance to go home and find room on the mantle for all the new hardware in their luggage. For others, the off-season will be a time to put a rough 2006 behind them.

Of course, finding news on top tennis players during the off-season may be compared to trying to convince a female bear to come out of her den during wintertime. Or shall we say, attempting to get a woman – on vacation – off of an island out in the Caribbean?

Even though there are no more tournaments until January, I’ll still be updating with news as it comes available. In the meanwhile, keep your internet browser bookmarked at On the Baseline. Players should start announcing their official schedules for 2007 soon, and the buzz for the Australian Open should start humming by Christmas. Plus, Aces and Faults will probably continue uninterrupted.

In anticipation of next season, On the Baseline will be bringing you the second edition of players to watch in the upcoming year. Another feature that I think will be an interesting addition is Open Forum Fridays. From now, we will be addressing your questions, theories, or just that fascinating fact about your favorite player that you always wanted to share with someone. All you have to do is go over to this page and submit your feedback. Every Friday I’ll select the best of them, post my opinion (for what it’s worth), and leave the rest to you folks in the comments. If it turns out to be a hit, we will continue doing it next season.

And most importantly, thank you so much for all of your support! On the Baseline would not be half as great without the people that visit from all around the world. I’ve enjoyed getting to “know” you through comments/emails and I’m looking forward to another great tennis season with each of you.

Pax Vobiscum Y’all . . .

Well, Aaress, it’s all up to me to thank you for providing such a wonderful website.

I spent the weekend reading all your entries and people’s comments of the three weeks that I missed during my vacation. You know the saying – there’s nothing more boring than yesterday’s news. I still read through the last 3 weeks with pleasure because I find your postings, insightful, positive and all-encompassing – in short, worth reading any time. Take it as a compliment!

I, too look forward to next season and hope that all our favorite players will be well rested and up to their best tennis downunder!

Lest it seem that I take this site for granted… please accept my sincerest thanks, also, Aaress.

Can’t say it often enough – you do a fantastic job here.

    *hugs & kisses*

My Latin is sluggish (actually non-existant). What was the title? Sounded catchy.

The Friday Forum sounds interesting to this newcomer to women’s tennis.

stewpot – it means I came, I saw, I want to go home.

It’s actually a twist on the classic line from Julius Ceaser – Veni, vidi, vici – or I came, I saw, I conquered.
