Sony Ericsson Night Tennis in Madrid Video Clip

As most of you have heard, Sony Ericsson unveiled a new innovation to tennis last week at the Championships in Madrid. The latest thing, dubbed Night Tennis, is obviously played at night, with ultraviolet lights, plenty of music, and is aimed at party-goers, in hopes of bringing them closer to the real game.

Club Sony Ericsson, an unofficial blog, captured some raw footage of the event, which you can see by clicking on the play button on the YouTube clip below.

After watching the clip, I will admit that visually it is a cool event and an intriguing twist on the game of tennis.

However, I just don’t see how this will help promote professional tennis. It will probably boost ticket sales at select events, but are these same people going to be sitting in the seats when the real tennis starts being played? There is talk of having real pros compete at the Night Tennis events, and that may help draw cross-over crowds.

Night Tennis managed to keep people partying in Madrid until 4AM, but I seriously doubt if these same “fans” would sit through a real three-set match between players outside of the top ten.
