This afternoon former world number one Lindsay Davenport announced that she and her husband Jon Leach are currently expecting their first child.

© Sara Quinnett - Lindsay DavenportIn a statement released by her agent Tony Godsick, Lindsay confirmed that the rumors that first appeared in South Korea early this morning were true.

She has contemplated retirement for the past couple of years, mostly because of the desire to start a family with her husband Jon.

But each time Lindsay came close to hanging up her racquet for good, she once again felt the pull back to the tennis courts – that is, up until now.

The article states that Lindsay will miss at least the start of the 2007 season, but it seems possible that Davenport, who has come so close to retirement in the past, may finally decide to announce her official retirement from the tennis circuit.

Congratulations are definitely in order for the happy couple, and Lindsay, thank you for giving the Tour and your fans twelve years of championship tennis.

6:04PM Update: ESPN has published an article with Lindsay saying that she “. . . can’t imagine playing again.”

I’m happy for her if she’s happy with the child. I really am.

But concerning her tennis career?!?!?@!?$?$@?$@?!@#? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I’m so sorry, but Davenport is like my favorite player ever. I wanted to see her take home one last Slam next year. Never playing again? That makes me so sad. Why couldn’t Sharapova get pregnant or something?

But like I said. I’m happy for her if she’s happy.

Why couldn’t Sharapova get pregnant or something?

Oh Chris, you’re kind of out of luck right now.

Hey, if it can happen to a 15-year-old Special K, it can happen to anyone.

Hey all Lindsay fans. I know it would be said to hear that Lindsay will not ever pick up her racquet to play a professional match, but as rightly said above, if she is happy, we should be.

All those days when she was trying to win tournaments & GS’s’ we sided with her and cheered for her, then why not today?/???

Yes, indeed i feel it will be an end of tennis for all those who follow Davenport, but it will happen sometime in life, so take it as it comes.

3 cheers for the American tennis Legend – TOWER OF POWER Lindsay DAVENPORT

    HIP HIP HURRAY!!!!!!
    HIP HIP HURRAY!!!!!!!!!
    HIP HIP HURRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kinjal Somaiya I totally agree with your post above. While I’m a bit sad to see Lindsay go, I’m happy for her because it because of pregnancy not an injury and its something she has wanted for a long time. I read the ESPN article and she seems happy and at peace with it then its a great way for her to go out and I hope Lindsay is happy in whatever she decides to do after tennis, she deserves it.

I love Lindsay, she has the best ground strokes (just my opinion so don’t start any argument :-P). I love the way she hits the way, it looks so smooth and easy, but so much power.

I’m happy that she’s finally having a baby…time to rest, coach that baby and maybe one day he/she will battle against Kim, Henin, or Sharapova’s babies…even Graf’s baby! :-D

like any other lindsay fan, i am happy for jon and lindsay and their coming first child. as to her ‘retirement’ a word which she herself would not want to use, let’s just wait after she gives birth and add maybe another year, until she finally decides to hang her racket. for now, its understandable that she gives full attention to her coming baby and her preparation for motherhood. yup, let’s continue to cheer for her..go lindsay!

Best wishes to Lindsay and her husband.

If you have to leave the tour – what better reason? I wish them joy, health and happiness.

Will Ame be the last one to have beaten her?

Yes, Nexty, it looks like Amelie will be the last person to beat Lindsay because Lindsay is not planning on playing any more events next season.
