Freak Accident Forces Nicole Vaidisova out of Hong Kong Doubles

Nicole Vaidisova - Watsons Water Champions Challenge

Nicole Vaidisova had planned to play doubles with Elena Dementieva this week at Hong Kong’s Watsons Water Champions Challenge, but a freak accident in the shower has forced her out of the competition.

Vaidisova, who is currently at a career high of No. 10 in the world, slipped in the shower and cut her finger, preventing her from effectively using her two-handed backhand.

Tournament director Terry Catton said: “Nicole Vaidisova slipped in the shower and cut a finger on her left hand.

“The tournament doctor recommends she withdraws from the doubles. However, she feels she should be fit to play in the singles tomorrow.”

Junior Wimbledon champion Caroline Wozniacki will replace Vaidisova in doubles, and now instead of playing with Dementieva in her next match, Vaidisova will face her in the singles competition later this evening.
