US Open Champions Reach Watsons Water Champions Challenge Final

Kim Clijsters - Watsons Water Champions Challenge

The final at the 2007 Watsons Water Champions Challenge in Hong Kong will be decided between two former champions at the US Open.

Kim Clijsters, the 2005 US Open winner, will be taking on reigning US Open champion Maria Sharapova in Sunday’s match.

Both players struggled in their semifinal matches today and were each forced into close, three sets matches. Clijsters and Sharapova both came from behind to win; Clijsters going 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Patty Schnyder and Sharapova had to overcome her own service woes against Elena Dementieva 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Kim Clijsters holds a 4-2 record over the head of Maria, but she has lost both of their last meetings in straight sets.

No way! Kimba in 3, baby! :)
I need her to end her losing streak against Sharapova, NOW! She’ll never win the AO, otherwise!

Surely my eyes deceive me! :)

You’re not pulling for Mauresmo? Momofan, I know Amelie’s chances of a repeat are not as great as say Sharapova’s chances of winning the AO, but surely you have not given up hoping?!!?

    OHHH NEVER AARESS! lol. :P
I’m of course pulling for Amelie the most, and definitely not discounting her, but I’d love to see a Kimmy-Amelie final, and even though Amelie’s my favorite, I mean, I loooove Kim, too, and I don’t want her to retire with “only” one Slam :P But yes, ALLEZ AMELIE!!! (but also Kimmy…she’s sooo sweet! :))

(Honestly though, I agree with you…this Slam, and mostly this year, has got Sharapova’s name written all over it).

Ooh, now that sounds good - an Amelie vs. Kim final. Definitely one worth watching at the crack of dawn.

I’m sitting here watching Dinara Safina put the pressure on Martina. If Hingis can’t figure out a way to defeat Safina, she’s going to be crushed next week at the AO against the likes of Sharapova, Mauresmo, Clijsters, and even Kuznetsova.

    YESSS! I was right!
    Kimba d. Maria, 6-3, 7-6(8).
WOOHOO! :) I am sooooo happy. Go Kimmie!!!

WOOOOOO My 2 fave players in the top 10… yay!
I only got home in time to see the trophy presentation… but I’m so happy with the result!

    Good Call Momofan!

That’s a great way for Kim to start her year - a straight sets win over Maria. Nice.

BTW, did you get a chance to watch via the live webcam? It did not like my mac.

It didn’t like my PC AT ALL. That website is MESSED UP, I tell ya. The live scoreboard broke down repeatedly, including, most importantly, at 4-4 in the tiebreak! (I’m sure I’m not the only one it happened to, either). They better fix the website for next year, grrrr.
