Whoever said that lightning never strikes twice never faced Kim Clijsters on a tennis court.
For the second straight year, the congenial Belgian has defeated the best tennis players in the world for the title at the Watsons Water Champions Challenge in Hong Kong.
This year Clijsters’ victim in the final was US Open champion Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova, who is within striking distance of the number one ranking due to Justine Henin-Hardenne’s withdrawal from the Australian hard court season, mounted a charge in the second set, but by that time, it was too late to deny Clijsters a second title. After a difficult tie-break, Clijsters sealed her win 6-3, 7-6 (8).
Junior Wimbledon champion Caroline Wozniacki, who replaced Svetlana Kuznetsova because of her bronchitis, defeated Yan Zi 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the silver group final.
