Former world number one Venus Williams has pulled out of next week’s Australian Open because of continued problems with her left wrist.

The lingering effects of this injury has caused her to miss a substantial amount of time on the WTA Tour, including last season’s US Open.

She has not given any indication when she will return to the tennis tour, but at least she will not have to worry about losing any substantial ranking points after this year’s event concludes at Melbourne Park.

In 2006, she lost to Bulgarian teenager Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6, 6-0, 9-7 in the opening round.

She will be joining the growing list of absentees that already includes three other Grand Slam champions, current world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne, Mary Pierce, and Anastasia Myskina.

That stinks. Venus is my favorite thing about tennis. I really hope she gets fit soon, because tennis is more boring without her, in my opinion.
