Kim Clijsters will be heading into her final Australian Open with a perfect record and the Tier II Medibank International title in Sydney, Australia.
On the same continent, Russian teenager Anna Chakvetadze captured her third career title at the Moorilla Hobart International.
Clijsters, who is still planning on retiring at the end of the 2007 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season, ended Jelena Jankovic’s eight-match winning streak in the final today.
If Jankovic was running out of energy, it certainly did not affect the scoreboard much; Clijsters won the nail-biter final 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4. Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Meghann Shaughnessy won a close match of their own in the doubles final, with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) win over Marion Bartoli and Meilen Tu.
Anna Chakvetadze defeated first time finalist Vasilisa Bardina in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(3). The successful duo of Elenas (Likhovtseva and Vesnina) defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the doubles final at Hobart.

No, I actually went to sleep before the match started. I thought hard about staying up, but I decided to start saving up my sleep for the next two weeks because the final started at 2:30AM in my time zone! I hope to catch a rerun on The Tennis Channel sometime in the next few days, especially of the last part of the second set.
BTW – a few weeks ago you asked about the double bagels in the 2006 season, remember? Here is the complete list, courtesy of the WTA.

Have a great day!
Wow! What a great match! Clijsters looked down and out when down match point in the second set but just like in the US Semifinals, a questionable linecall threw Jelena off completely.
Jelena then looked out of it going down 4-0 in the third but fought back and almost claimed back the break.
I think both these girls are HUGE contenders next week.
I got the printed out draw in the newspaper this morning… HOW EXCITING!
Thanks Aaresse
yeah Brant, Jelena should have behaved better…but sometimes you cannot contro this kind of things….
