Hingis Scores 50th Win at the Australian Open, On Track to Meet Clijsters

For the second straight round at the 2007 Australian Open, Kim Clijsters and Martina Hingis have been playing simultaneously, and each time they both have advanced to the next round with comfortable wins.

If the two seeds continue to progress through the draw at this rate, a clash next week in the quarterfinals may be inevitable.

Thursday’s first match on Rod Laver Arena saw Kim Clijsters defeat Japan’s Akiko Morigami in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Kim’s first round was a complete shut-out for her opponent Vasilisa Bardina, but Morigami managed to break Clijsters’ serve twice during the fifty-nine minute match.

While Kim Clijsters was cruising through her second round match, Martina Hingis achieved yet another milestone in her distinguished career, her fiftieth career singles win at the Australian Open.

When Martina Hingis first appeared Down Under at the tournament, she was just fourteen years of age, and scored her first win over American Jolene Watanabe. Now twelve years later, the Swiss Miss has three Australian Open singles titles, four ladies doubles titles, and one mixed doubles trophy.

Hingis dominated most of the match, but Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva did manage to take advantage of Martina’s weak serve and break three times, before Hingis finally closed out the match 6-2, 6-2.

Clijsters and Hingis still have two more rounds to play through before setting up their eighth meeting. Hingis awaits the winner of the Aiko Nakamura/Sania Mirza match and Clijsters will play either Virginnie Razzano or Alona Bondarenko.
