Serena Williams has not competed since winning the Australian Open, but she is planning on stepping up her schedule this spring.
Serena is expected to compete at the Tour’s mandatory Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida next month, but she has also announced today her plans to play at the Tier I Family Circle Cup.
The Family Circle Cup will be held two weeks after the Sony Ericsson Open in Charleston, South Carolina and Serena’s decision to play only helped booster a field that already looks Grand Slam worthy.
“Serena’s performance at the Australian Open last month was remarkable and it showed us all how determined and focused she is on getting back to the top of her game,†noted Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director.
“Serena has certainly been a crowd favorite here in Charleston over the years and we are delighted to have her back. If fans want to see the best in women’s tennis then Charleston is definitely the place to be this April.â€
Six members of the current top ten including Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Martina Hingis, and Nicole Vaidisova are expected to compete, and now that Serena has joined the field, five former world number ones will be in the draw.
Serena has never won the title in Charleston, but did manage to reach the final in 2003 before losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne in straight sets.
“I’m really looking forward to starting my clay court season at the Family Circle Cup,†commented Serena Williams. “Charleston is a great city to visit, and I’ve always enjoyed playing the tournament.â€
She will officially start her 2007 clay court season here and given her history of playing select tournaments, she may not compete at more than one or two events on clay before heading to Roland Garros.
