I remember that 2001 semifinal between Serena and Venus at Indian Wells so well! We had a baseball game that night, and I was rushing home to watch the match, and when I turned on the tv Pam Shriver was interviewing Venus who said she had to pull out. I was so angry! I hated them for like two hours after that.
And then during the final, as Richard and Venus walked into the stadium, they were boed, and I must admit I booed too. Then they booed Serena when she came, and continued to boo her every opportunity they had, even after she won the championship! I just thought the fans there were class-less, and when Richard later reported he heard racial slurs aimed at him and Venus, racist bigots. I don’t blame them for never playing that tournament again and I think the whole Williams family deserves an apology from the tournament directors.
