Venus Williams Will Join Serena at Charleston’s Family Circle Cup

It is rare to see Venus and Serena both enter the same tournament other than Miami or a Grand Slam, but the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina has convinced five-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams to join her sister Serena in April’s event.

Family Circle CupThe Family Circle Cup, which is scheduled for April 7th - 15th, 2007 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, now boasts one of the most impressive player fields on the WTA Tour this year, and includes 4 of the Top 5 players in the world as well as 15 of the Top 20.

Venus, who has only played one event this season, will be competing for the third time at the Tier I tournament.

“The Family Circle Cup is a great event and the city of Charleston is wonderful place to visit.” said Williams.

“With such a good player field, this tournament will be great preparation for the clay court season leading up to the French Open.”

She spent much of 2006 on the injured list because of an injury in her left wrist, but she successfully returned last month at the Regions Morgan Championships and the Cellular South Cup in Memphis by crushing top seed Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-1 for the title.

With Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams already scheduled to compete, the tournament officials at the Family Circle Cup were more than happy to add Venus to the field.

“As a former Family Circle Cup champion and five-time Grand Slam winner, Venus has the true mark of a champion,” noted Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director.

“She joins an unprecedented Family Circle Cup player field that now includes five former World No.1 players and the current top player in the world. Combined, these six women have won 26 Grand Slam singles titles.”

This is great news for both the tour and for fans of the Williams sisters. Imagine a Venus v’s Serena final.

Are you going to be able to go to the Family Circle cup and do photos, interviews etc?

Spud, that would be incredible to see an All-Williams final. It has been way too long since we’ve seen one.

Stewpot, I would love to go to Charleston next month, but its just not going to work with my schedule, not to mention that it would be pretty expensive counting airline flights and hotel arrangements.
