MIAMI BLOG: Final Moments from the Sony Ericsson Open

FROM THE SONY ERICSSON OPEN - This afternoon’s final was not sold-out, but the crowd (13,397 people) definitely got their money’s worth! Serena Williams and Justine Henin played to the loudest crowd I’ve heard since I arrived here and the fans cheered their hearts out while sporting all the purple Sony Ericsson WTA Tour hats that were given out this morning.
I have enjoyed every second of my time in Miami. The epic battle between Serena Williams and Justine Henin kept us all on the edge of our seats. At the end of the first set I refused to even leave my chair during the break. I guess I was caught up in the moment and didn’t want to miss anything. Remember, that was the first time that Serena had dropped a set during the entire tournament.
I did somehow manage to check in with the editor of On the Baseline, Aaress Lawless, but couldn’t even coherently answer her questions! The match was such a thrilling one and Serena Williams deserved every ounce of that comeback win.
I’m going to miss this beautiful tennis park and talking to you, but I’m getting ready to return to New York. My radio show airs tomorrow at 3:00pm to 4:30pm and I’m headed back for the opening day of MLB on Tuesday between the “Bronx Bombers” (aka Yankees) and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
However, feel free to tune in to my show tomorrow for some last news from the Sony Ericsson Open on Sunday. Aaress Lawless and I will probably be talking tennis at around 4:15pm East Coast time. Those of you in the NYC area can listen at 90.3FM or anyone around the world can listen online at www.WHCR.org.
Today’s match pretty much spoke for itself - as did many of the excellent displays of tennis I’ve watched over the past week. The fashion shows were great, the celebrities in the stands added some glam, the Mercedes Benz reminded me to keep dreaming, the picky vegetarian in me found some good food to eat, and my family - Linda & Alpha Mashack - were wonderful hosts.
I’ll leave you with a quote from what Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade told someone about Serena’s win today - “The comeback was fabulous. Great athletes do great things.”
Ciao and thank you for reading my articles over the past week!
