Open Forum Friday: Serena vs. Justine: Who Would Win Roland Garros

Marie writes:

“What about Serena’s chances of winning the French Open? Especially since Justine has been suffering from breathing problems.”

With Roland Garros less than two months away, the clear favorite is still Justine Henin. Granted, like you said, she has had some upper respiratory problems, but I’d expect that to be cleared up long before she hits the clay at Paris. Should Serena and Justine set up a rematch of the Sony Ericsson Open in the final, I’d give the edge to Justine as she is simply the best clay court player in the women’s game.

“Where is Aravane Rezai going? While the girls of her generation are playing great, she is just losing match after match! If she continues this way she is going to beat Spadea’s record of a 21-match losing streak! When I watched her in Doha, I realized that she had no technique and no game plan. Her game was like ”I hit the ball left and right as hard as I can.” I agree that she hits extremely hard! It was amazing! Every backhand she played went very fast!

You know that she has been banned with her father from using the French Open training center after Arsalan Rezai insulted the French Federation President Christian Bimes. What do you think of her and what should she change? Should she drop her father and take a real coach and
work seriously on her fitness?”

Nexty, I agree with you about Rezai’s backhand. She generates a lot of power on her backhand wing and goes for broke on each shot. Unfortunately, I think that may be part of her trouble right now. Instead of trying to hit the felt off the ball each time, she needs to work on her fitness level and like you said, throw in a little more technique and start mixing up her shots more. She shot up through the rankings in 2006, but now that she has reached inside of the top fifty, she is learning that it is much harder to stay there.

Experience is something that will only come with time and Aravane does have a tendency to play streaky. Fortunately, in addition to her power and counter-punching, she does have a good clay court game which will hopefully be on display leading into the French Open.

I’m not very informed about how well she is working with her father as her coach, but his temperament has definitely been a problem.

Thank you everyone for your questions and feedback! If you have an opinion on these topics or want to start a discussion on a different subject, feel free to leave a comment below.

Also, Nexty sent this link in about a voting contest on who will be the next top player. It is in French, but I think that you’ll find that it is fairly easy to navigate.

Have a fabulous weekend and Resurrection Day!

Very hard one to choose. But let me add here that this should be a fight of wills and probably the best match of the year. MAY THE BEST ON THE DAY WIN!!!!
What if neither one makes it to the finals. WHO WILL BE THERE INSTEAD….interesting???? Would love to see Amelie FINALLY bag it :)
