Injury Costs Serena Williams Chance at Family Circle Cup Title

Family Circle Cup
It was a bad Tuesday for the Family Circle Cup as top seed Nicole Vaidisova lost in three sets to Michaella Krajicek and former world number one Serena Williams retired with an injury during her opening round match against Yung-Jan Chan.

Details are still sketchy as to the extent of Serena’s injury, but according to the WTA Tour, she retired from her second round match, down 3-5 in the first set because of a right groin strain.

Serena has played well all season and this was the first sign of any injuries plaguing the former world number one. Her retirement today could potentially place in jeopardy her hopes of winning Roland Garros - and continuing in pursuit of an elusive Grand Slam.

Serena’s retirement was not the only bad news of the day for fans and tournament officials in Charleston. Top seed Nicole Vaidisova blew an early lead over Michaella Krajicek and lost in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

I’ll have more details on Serena’s injury later today or tomorrow.

Chan is a great up and comer. That’s what I hate about Serena, it’s not like she was rolling around the floor in pain. She could’ve at least finished the first set, even if she knew she was going to lose it 6-3 for sure. Not very sportsman like of her. But then again, typical Serena. Good, I’d like to see the likes of Li, Jankovic, and Venus advance in this tourney a lot more than her.

Richard, you’re such a hater. Get a life!

Just because I don’t like Serena it makes me a hater?

Serena was actually down 5-2, but she fought hard to hold serve to make it 5-3. I’m sorry, but a serious groin injury like the one she described doesn’t reflect the score.

And don’t you sound smart? You have zero opinion of other people’s thoughts, and the best line you can come up with is get a life? You’re just as pathetic as Serena. Careless and unmotivated.

See what I mean. You have no opinions of your own. So before you criticize others, you need to go to school and learn some social skills.

    Lame.

Okay guys - you each had your say. How about we give it a rest and return to the topics at hand?

    Thanks.
