Who’s Up

Jelena Jankovic (7*/9) – Jankovic’s first big title rewarded her with a check for $181,980 dollars and a new career high.

Dinara Safina (10/12) – She lost two-and-two in the ladies final at Charleston to Jankovic, but it was still good enough for her to once again reach the top 10 and tie her career high.

Tatiana Golovin (18/19) – Tatiana is back to her own career high – originally set two years ago on April 18, 2005.

Venus Williams (22/29) – Venus Williams raced back into the top 25 last week, giving the United States two players inside of the top twenty-five.

Michaella Krajicek (40/54) – Krajicek managed to knock out two seeds before losing in the quarterfinals at the Family Circle Cup to Vera Zvonareva.

Anastasia Rodionova (63*/73) – The Russian born, German resident played her way through qualifying before losing in the second round at Charleston to Jelena Jankovic.

Yung-Jan Chan (69*/92) – Chinese Taipei’s Yung-Jan Chan advanced to the third round at the Family Circle Cup when Serena Williams retired injured, but only managed to win three games against Venus Williams in her next match.

Edina Gallovits (98*/106) – Romania now has a player inside of the top 100 thanks to Gallovits who won an ITF Circuit event last week.

Who’s Down

Nadia Petrova (9/7) – This time last season Nadia Petrova was one of the hottest players on the WTA Tour. Now she is in danger of dropping out of the top 10.

Patty Schnyder (19/16) – Patty Schnyder was dumped out of the Family Circle Cup in her opening round match. She has not won a match in three tournaments since losing to Justine Henin in the quarterfinals at Doha.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld (45/31) – Groenefeld has not won a match since the second round at the Australian and took some time off after Doha to get herself back on track. She is set to return this week by leading the German squad in Fed Cup duty this weekend.

Jamea Jackson (95/85) – Jamea Jackson’s chances of becoming the next big star from the United States took a hit when she had surgery a few months ago.

*Asterisk means that the player set a new career-high this week.

What was Nadia thinking when she skipped Charleston?

Jankovic plans to play Warsaw, Germany, and Rome leading up to French Open…perhaps the only remaining Top 10 player to play so many tourny a year, but soon when she hits her highs like Henin and the other, she’ll stay skipping.

No clue Nick – but that decision cost her a bundle on the rankings. She barely managed to stay in the top 10 this week – No. 11 Anna Chakvetadze is only 22 points behind Petrova.

Hopefully she will go deep into the draw at Berlin because she is the defending champion there as well.

    A tale of two Sisters

    Talk about night and day!
    - Serena Williams
    1. When she breaks an opponent and hsa to serve the opponent begins to tremble
    2. If she one game from closing out the match and has the serve her opponents knees begin to knock..

    – Venus Williams
    1. When she breaks an opponent and has to serve the opponent takes heart they will get the break back (money in the bank)
    2. If she is one game from closing out the match and has the serve her opponent begins to salivate (she ain’t going nowhere)

My oh my, Serena murders opponents with her serving whereas opponents line-up at the thought of Venus serving.

Venus has become the “new” Dimentiava (so sad).
