Injured Serena Williams Withdraws from Qatar Telecom German Open

Qatar Telecom German OpenThe groin injury that forced Serena Williams out of the Family Circle Cup has continued to disrupt the former world number one’s plans.

The Qatar Telecom German Open has just announced that Serena has withdrawn from next week’s event in Berlin.

“I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the tournament because of an injury to my groin that I haven’t fully recovered from yet,” said Williams according to tournament officials.

“The Qatar Telecom German Open is a fantastic event and I hope to play there in the future.”

The Qatar Telecom German Open is one of the largest European events on clay and was expected to include not only Serena, but also world number one Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Martina Hingis.

Anastasia Myskina, who was planning on returning from a foot injury at Berlin, has also withdrawn from the tournament.

The tournament runs from May 7-13, 2007.
