The Internazionali d’Italia will be missing one of its biggest stars next week as former world number one Maria Sharapova has announced that she will be withdrawing because of a shoulder injury.
Sharapova, who has not played on the Tour since the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, is skipping the tournament to allow her shoulder more time to heal before competing at Roland Garros.
“I am going to have to pull out of Rome today,” said Sharapova on her official website. “My body is slowly getting better, but in no way will I be ready to play in Rome.”
Even though she will gain an extra week to prepare for the French Open, I still would place a question mark behind her name regarding her chances of competing at Paris because of her injury
“It is such a shame because I like playing in Rome and I have to pull out two years in a row,” added Sharapova. “I just want to let my fans know that I am doing everything possible to be ready to play the French Open.”
The Italian Open begins on April 14.
