Ana Ivanovic’s chance to win back-to-back Tier I titles was temporarily suspended today when she pulled out of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia because of an ankle injury.
Ivanovic originally injured her left ankle during the final of the Qatar Telecom German Open on Sunday, but was confident heading into the tournament at Rome that she would be able to compete.
But according to her official website, she tried practicing yesterday, only to have the pain increase.
As a precaution, especially with Roland Garros less than two weeks away, the twelfth seed decided to withdraw today. She was replaced in the draw by Italian Sara Errani.
“I’m really disappointed that I have to pull out of this tournament, especially because I missed it last year,” said Ivanovic. “Also I was in good form after this win in Berlin, so it’s frustrating that I cannot play. The pain is too much.”
Her injury is not expected to keep her from contending at Roland Garros.
“Now I have to rest, have some more treatment and make sure I am fully fit to play in Paris,” added Ivanovic.
The 2007 French Open begins in Paris on May 27.
