Anastasia Myskina’s road to recovery has not been easy, with the latest setback coming today as it was announced that she has withdrawn from Wimbledon.
With the exception of two matches at Auckland and Roland Garros, Myskina has missed most of the 2007 season because of an injury to her big toe. According to early reports, this same injury is costing her a chance at playing Wimbledon, which begins on the 25th.
She had surgery on her foot in January, and although she tried to play on it at Paris last month, she said after her first round loss to Meghann Shaughnessy that it was bothering her once again.
Her movement was hampered during her 6-1, 6-0 defeat and afterward Myskina admitted that the injury has changed the way she is able to compete.
“You can see that I’m moving like a big cow now,” said Myskina. “I can’t push from the left foot like I used to run. I can’t run.”
She did not officially say that she was once again contemplating retirement, but did admit that she will no longer play professional tennis if her ranking continues to slip.
“I’m not going to be here if I’m going to be like 80, or 100,” added Myskina. “I’m not that kind of person, of tennis player who wants to be here just because I want to be here.”
If she has set a goal of calling it quits once her ranking hits No. 80, she may not be on Tour much longer. As of Monday, her ranking fell down to No. 76.

She’ll be out of the top 100 after her very good 2006 grass season isn’t defended. Guess this is the end of Myskina?

Could be the beginning of the end - personally, I’d be really surprised to see her come back next season if her foot still has not healed completely. She said at Roland Garros how good her life was off the Tour at home, so she knows what life without tennis would be like.
