The graveyard court nearly lived up to its name today when Naomi Cavaday held two match points over Martina Hingis’ head in the first round of Wimbledon.
Court No. 2 is often referred to as the “Graveyard of Champions” and Martina Hingis flirted dangerously close to being its latest victim.
She came out completely flat against the British wild-card and did not even manage to get on the scoreboard until 3-love in the first set. Cavaday, who is one of the most promising players from the UK coming through the ranks, held her nerve despite a late charge from Hingis to take the opening set in the tie-break 7-6(1).
Hingis briefly took the lead in the second set, before facing two match points at 4-5. She saved both of them and held to force a deciding set 7-5.
Unfortunately for Cavaday, the third set was all Hingis. The form she struggled to find in the opening set was on target and she cruised into the second round with a third set bagel for 6-7(1), 7-5, 6-0.
She will next face Aiko Nakamura in the second round.
