Maria Sharapova Withdraws from Fed Cup Against USA

Fed CupOnly days after being added to her first Fed Cup team roster, world number two Maria Sharapova is off the squad.

According to Russia’s team captain Shamil Tarpischev, Sharapova is still nursing her injured right shoulder.

World number fifty-eight Elena Vesnina will be replacing Sharapova at Stowe.

“She said she is injured, so she will not play,” Russia Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev[sic] said on Monday.

By declaring herself willing to compete earlier this season before Russia’s first opening tie against Spain, she made herself eligible to compete at the Beijing Olympics next year. She has never played for Russia in Fed Cup, and frankly, I’d be surprised if she does in the near future.

Sharapova is also not the only person injured on Russia’s squad - Svetlana Kuznetsova is battling a shoulder injury of her own and could possibly be axed from the roster.
