The United States Tennis Association announced today that the 2007 US Open prize money purse has been boosted to a new all-time record.
For the first time prize money at the Grand Slam event will top $19.6 million dollars, over a million dollars more than the amount awarded at the 2006 tournament.
“Today’s players are some of the most talented, competitive, and hard working athletes in sports,” said Arlen Kantarian, CEO of the USTA. “The increased prize money and upgraded player facilities reflect the tremendous excitement and entertainment they bring to the US Open.”
In addition to the record prize money, the top three male and female finishers in the US Open Series will be able to earn up to $2.6 million in bonuses, potentially boosting the prize money to $22.6 million dollars.
The USTA also announced today that they will be completing a $7.5 million dollar renovation project in the player areas, including new locker rooms, an upgraded player lounge and new state-of-the-art fitness center.
Both singles champions will receive an equal purse of $1.4 million dollars, not including their potential bonus earnings from the US Open Series, and both will also receive a new Lexus.
