Anne Worcester and the Pilot Pen tennis tournament in New Haven scored a huge coup this season.
Instead of trying to sell tickets with a lackluster field the week before the US Open, this year’s Pilot Pen will feature the return of former world number one Lindsay Davenport.
Davenport, who said only yesterday that she had not made any “final decisions”, has decided to test the comeback waters by teaming up with her fellow American Lisa Raymond in the ladies doubles event.
“After the birth of my son Jagger on June 10, I am very excited to announce that I will return to professional tennis at the Pilot Pen in August,” Davenport said according to this WTA Tour article. “This will be my eighth visit to New Haven and I have obviously loved playing the Pilot Pen for years.”
Needless to say, tournament director Anne Worcester is thrilled to have the three-time Grand Slam champion headline the event, even if she is only playing doubles.
“To think that just five and a half weeks after giving birth to a healthy baby son Lindsay has decided to return to competitive tennis is nothing short of a miracle,” said Worcester. “And that she has chosen Pilot Pen Tennis and New Haven for her comeback is truly a privilege and honor for us.”
The 2007 Pilot Pen tournament begins on August 20.
