2006 US Open champion Maria Sharapova has an extra incentive to help her defend her title next week. If she wins the final Grand Slam of the 2007 season, she will take home an extra $1 million dollars in prize money.
The Greatest Road Trip in Sports has crowned its new champion, and Maria Sharapova has taken home the top honors this season. She won the Tier I Acura Classic and reached the semifinals at the East West Bank Classic, placing her ahead of Jelena Jankovic, Justine Henin, and Patty Schnyder.
Schnyder had a chance to overtake Sharapova on the race standings this week at the Pilot Pen in New Haven, but was upset in her first round match. Jankovic and Henin were not entered into the event.
Sharapova’s US Open Series victory awards her with double prize money at the US Open. If she wins the title at Flushing Meadows, she will receive a record paycheck of $2.4 million dollars.
