OFF: Who Will Win the 2007 US Open Ladies Title?

With the US Open only days away, today’s Open Forum Friday question is simple, and straight to the point.
Folks, you have had months to think about it and two days to ponder and psychoanalyze the draw. Some of you have even deliberated over the head-to-head records of your favorite pro’s first round opponent.
And many of you took one look at the lopsided bottom half and guessed that this may be a tournament to remember for some fortunate newcomer.
Regardless, I’m sure each of you has an opinion and we’d love for you to take part in today’s discussion. You can make it as simple as telling who will win, but it would be even more interesting if you’d tell us why you think they will triumph on the 8th.
Have a great weekend everyone, and don’t forget the “Pick the Winners” game begins on Sunday, along with our daily previews of the action at Flushing Meadows!

Today’s field of players is sure tough. I’ll make a wild prediction and say that a “vic” or and “ova” has the best chance. lol But of course there’s that current #1 that messes everything up (for me - I just don’t like her). For some reason I don’t feel the 2 amazons have a good chance this year, but there are still dangerous. So it’s really up in the air!

It really s**** that everyone worth mentioining is in the top half of the draw.
I’m gonna pick Venus to go all the way. She’ll have no problem with Ivanovic in the 16s, and then maybe a tough match with Jankovic in the quarters. I dont believe Venus has lost to Henin since their first match six or seven years ago and we know she likes the tougher competition, so I think she’ll get through that one. And then the final… Venus can easily handle any of the top russians, Sharapova, Kuznetsova, or Petrova. So as long as her knee holds up, I really think Venus can do it.

I’m going to unfortunately pick Sharapova to win. Venus will lose to Jankovic, Jankovic will lose to Henin, and Sharapova will over power Henin. This isn’t fair! It seems Maria always gets an easy draw!

Sharapova has the bottom half almost to herself! How did that happen while Henin, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Venus and Serena are all in the top half?! It’s just amazing how the draw gods always seem to favor Sharapova.
But anyway, Sharapova is due to meet Chakvetadze in the quarters if the seedings hold and I really believe that Chakvetadze is due for a win against Sharapova. So I’m making this bold prediction that Chakvetadze will defeat Sharapova in the quarters, and go on to her first grand slam final ever. A very bold prediction, I know.
Of course, the winner will definitely come from the top half of the draw. The names Henin, Serena and Venus come to mind. I’ll go and pick Venus to win the 2007 US Open.
But of course I’m hoping for a Dementieva triumph. Hehe.

I’m going to put my money on Venus also. I have to agree with (God help me) Chris Fowler in his comments after the Pilot Pen tonight in that Venus is in a good space. You can never discount inner peace as that all important glue that fortifies a person in pulling everything together. There’s no question about the experience or skill, only mental availability. And I believe that it’s there and that she will come thorugh this year.

I can’t help but pick a Willimas sister to win and after watching the way they both have benn playing Im gogin to pick Venus to go all the way… She has been remarkably alert, focused, and high spirited in her first three matches. Next comes Ana Ivonovic who she has a 3-0 lifetime record against. I totally expect Venus to win this match in strait sets, then Jankovic who will be to worn out from her grueling year. Next the winner of the Serena- Henin match.. If Serena wins, Venus is just playing to well to lose to her younger sister, and if Henin wins, thedefeat of Serena will spur her to demolish Henin, then u have the final.. Sharapova went out today so who is left… Kuznetsova, Vaidasova, and Chekvadatze.. Im taking Venus in strat sets over either one of them, and another Wimbledon US Open back-to-back year!! HOPEFULLY SHE CAN ADD THE AUSTRALIAN AND FRECH TO HER RESUME’!!!!
