Justine Henin, Venus and Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic, and Ana Ivanovic will be back on court Wednesday as the second round of ladies action at the US Open begins in Flushing Meadows.
The opening round was a breeze for the stars in the top half, and now that the first match nerves are gone, a clear favorite should begin to emerge over the next few rounds.
Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic may have the toughest match on the schedule for Wednesday as she takes on French slugger Aravane Rezai. Rezai had her Grand Slam breakthrough a year ago on the courts of Flushing Meadows and blasted her way to the fourth round before losing to Elena Dementieva. Ivanovic is hot off her win at the East West Bank Classic, but if she fails to serve aggressively and keep the points short, Rezai may be able to pull an upset.
Venus Wiiliams cruised into the second round on Monday, but Serena was not so fortunate as Germany’s Angelique Kerber kept her on the court a little longer than the former champion would have hoped. Serena still managed to reach the second round in straight sets, but the match revealed that the rust from her injury-induced layoff has yet to burn off.
Maria Elena Camerin will not be an easy foe, but if Serena’s volatile serve continues to bail her out on break points, she will definitely be the overwhelming favorite to reach the third round.
World number one Justine Henin will be competing against Bulgarian teenager Tsvetana Pironkova. Fans will remeber that Pironkova was the player who scared Serena Williams in the first round of Roland Garros before Williams found her game for a three set victory.
Other matches to follow on Wednesday include Venus Williams vs. Ioana Raluca Olaru and Jelena Jankovic vs. Olga Govortsova.

Camerin is exactly the kind of opponent that Serena can devour in less than an hour. Henin, on the other hand could have her hands full with Pironkova.
