As a result of one of the most lopsided draws in the Open Era at the US Open, three unlikely players have reached the quarterfinals today at Flushing Meadows.
Despite being the 2004 champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova was never favored to reach the final round this season at the US Open. Now, the Russian is only two matches away from reaching her third Grand Slam championship match. She defeated Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka in two straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Agnes Szavay has played the best tennis of her career over the past two weeks, and she booked herself a berth in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-4, 7-6(1) win over Ukraine’s Julia Vakulenko earlier today.
Shahar Peer advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Agnieszka Radwanska in two sets 6-4, 6-1.
Anna Chakvetadze and Tamira Paszek will compete later today in the night session for the final spot in the round of eight.
