An evening of spectacular tennis is on the schedule for Wednesday as 2007 Wimbledon champion Venus Williams takes on world number three Jelena Jankovic for a berth in the semifinals.
Tuesday night featured her younger sister Serena; Wednesday’s night session is all about Venus’ recaptured form, her new clothing line, and her goals of winning her seventh Grand Slam title.
Standing in her way is third seed Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic’s game is not unfamiliar to the former top star, the pair having played each other twice already this season.
Jelena Jankovic emerged as the winner on both occasions, but not before Venus fought to push her into three sets. Both wins were on clay, with this being only their second meeting on hard courts. Given the way both players competed earlier this year, the matches could have swung either way, making Wednesday’s meeting a match to follow closely.
No small part due to Sharapova’s shocking exit, Venus and Jelena’s match was delayed an extra day so the USTA could have them headline the night session on Wednesday.
Fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova will be taking on Agnes Szavay in the first match of the day session on Arthur Ashe Stadium in what will be a rematch of the Pilot Pen final ten days ago. That match swung completely in the direction of Szavay, until she tearfully retired with a back injury in the second set.
Not only is the young Hungarian fast on the court, but she is a fast healer. Her back is 100% better and she is eager to get another shot at ousting the 2004 US Open champion.
Shahar Peer continues to inspire Israeli fans at home and abroad, and with her debut in the quarterfinals, she became the first female player from Israel to reach the round of eight at the US Open. The hardworking slugger will have her work cut out for her on Wednesday as she takes on the latest Russian to crack the top ten, Anna Chakvetadze.
Out of all the Russians at the top of women’s tennis, Chakvetadze’s game right now is second only to Maria Sharapova - and with Sharapova’s ranking set to fall, she may be able to eclipse her soon.

Actually, Jankovic has won both the matches between herself and Venus this year (Charleston and Rolland Garros). Venus won their only match on hard courts.

Actually, Venus owns two victories against Jankovic, first in Stanford of 05. Williams also prevailed in Rome last year, where Jankovic finally snapped her 10 match losing streak then.

Ouch - I’m not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that . . .
Venus lost both times at the Family Circle Cup and RG this year.
Thanks

Looking at recent form Jankovic has no chance. Vee was playing horribly at Roland Garros, and still managed to take a set of JJ. she’s SOOO much better and more confident now. as for Jelena, losing a set to Bammer is bad enough, but losing one to Alice Cornet is even worse. Venus in straight sets.
