Lindsay’s Back! Davenport Victorious in Singles Comeback

Lindsay Davenport insists that the match was not as easy as the scoreboard implies, but regardless, the former world number one is back and ready to resume business as usual on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

Playing in her first singles match in almost a year, Davenport cruised past Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 today in Bali.

Lindsay DavenportNot only did she win by dropping only four games, at one point during the forty-five minute encounter, Lindsay won twenty straight points.

She did not face one break point on her serves.

After the match, Davenport admitted that although it was a straightforward win, it still was a challenge.

“It was a challenge out there for me after not playing for so long,” said Davenport, who won the singles title in Bali two years ago 2005.

“I was trying to focus a lot and to be real concentrated, and I’m really happy I won. You never really know what to expect after a year off and especially having a baby, so to come out and play the way I did is so exciting and it means a lot to me.”

After taking so much time away from the sport, Davenport headed into the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic realistic about her goals of returning.

“It did exceed my expectations. I know that I can play good tennis, and I know that if I stay healthy and play well I can do well,” said Davenport.

“I didn’t know what to expect after everything I’ve been through so it is kind of surprising. I really would have been fine coming in and not winning, just to be back out on the court as the first step of coming back. So to then go ahead and play well against a good player and doing a lot of things that I need to do well is pretty rewarding.”

Davenport will face her countrywoman qualifier Julie Ditty in the second round.

I just wanted to take a moment to say it is GREAT having Lindsay back. She is a true Champion and demonstrates her professionalism and grace at every turn. I am more inclined to watch and remain close to the WTA tour as long as Lindsay is part of it.

    Best of luck!!

This is truly amazing! Eleni Daniilidou can be a tough competitor and Lindsay just shut her down. I’m so impressed!

I too am glad that Davenport is back. I hope that she is able to bring her top game with her because she truly represents depth in the womeen’s field when she’s around.

I’m so happy she’s happy, of all the players, I would have to say I love Lindsay’s ground strokes the best…if she had the speed and varieties as Henin she would really dominate…happy happy!
