Host nation Russia has scored an almost insurmountable 2-0 lead after the first day of action in the 2007 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final.
Anna Chakvetadze struggled to a nervous three set 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Francesca Schiavone today, but in the second rubber, US Open finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova completely dominated Mara Santangelo 6-1, 6-2.
