Comeback Joy for Lindsay Davenport After Winning 52nd Career Title

Former world number one Lindsay Davenport has emphatically returned to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour by sweeping to the title in the first tournament of her comeback.

Davenport, who gave birth to her first child in June, defeated second seed Daniela Hantuchova Sunday in the final of the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Lindsay DavenportAfter winning her first singles match on Monday since the birth of son Jagger, Lindsay Davenport admitted that she was surprised because she hardly knew what to expect from herself after her year off the Tour.

Now, just six days later, Lindsay Davenport is still in shock after capturing her fifty-second career singles title.

“I’m a little bit in shock,” said Davenport after the win on Sunday. “It’s just overwhelming and exciting. Obviously, playing my first tournament back I was unsure physically how I would respond, and I swear this is probably the first tournament I’ve played in four years where I didn’t have anything wrong with my lower extremities.”

Davenport announced in December that she and her husband Jon Leach were expecting their first child. At the time, Davenport said that she could never anticipate playing on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour again.

After giving birth in June, Davenport realized that she missed the sport that has brought her legendary success. She tested the comeback waters last month at the Pilot Pen in New Haven, where she lost in the first round of the doubles competition with Lisa Raymond.

She is scheduled to participate next week at the China Open in Beijing.

It is a great honour for this generation who were deprived of the presence of an all-timer when Davenport announced retirement.

With her comeback, today’s generation will be able to watch the legend play live…..

Lindsay is a fantastic ambassador of women’s tennis & she has proved this time & again & latest last week when she captured Bali - her 52nd career title.

Long live the queen of Indian wells………
