Maria Sharapova’s persistent right shoulder injury has not yet healed, forcing her to skip the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
Sharapova, currently ranked fourth in the world, announced today that she has withdrawn from the upcoming event in Germany.
“I am very disappointed to be unable to play the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart because my right shoulder has not yet healed,” said Sharapova on her official website.
“I am doing everything I can to get back into competitive playing shape and hopefully on Tour in the run-up to the Sony Ericsson Championships, but at this point I remain day to day.”
She has not yet qualified for the season-ending Championships in Madrid, leaving open the possibility of her being overtaken on the race standings by Venus and Serena Williams.
Currently, Sharapova is in sixth place, with less than fifty points separating her from Serena Williams.
Only eight singles players are eligible to compete in the Championships.
