Disappointed and Injured, Martina Hingis Ends 2007 Tennis Season

Former world number one Martina Hingis has ended her 2007 tennis season early, effectively closing the book on a year plagued with injuries, personal troubles, and mediocre results.
In a statement released by Switzerland’s Zurich Open earlier today, the Swiss Miss has confirmed that she will be cutting her season short by pulling out of the tournament and will not compete again this year.
“I’m very disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Zurich Open,” said Hingis, “and that I can’t play in front of my home crowd.”
The Zurich Open is the final Tier I event of the year before the season-ending tournament in Madrid. Hingis is currently ranked twentieth on the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships standings, and has no chance of qualifying for the tournament.
Hingis also acknowledged that she has been suffering from a bad hip injury which has hampered her performance since March’s Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida.
“I’ve done everything I can to be able to compete,” Hingis added. “But since Key Biscayne I’ve had problems with my hip, and they’re still stopping me from playing any more tournaments this year and even from practising properly.”
A hip injury was not the only problem Hingis faced this year. She started the 2007 season in Australia by announcing her engagement to ATP Tour player Radek Stepanek, only to end the relationship shortly before the US Open.
Hingis has not indicated when she will be returning to the Tour, but has said that she is going “to take as much time as it needs to get fully fit again.”
Her best result of the season was winning the Toray Pan Pacific Open title in February.
Your Turn!
Now that Hingis has called it quits, who do you think will be the next player to end her season early?

I think Sharapova will wrap things up early… to find a solution to her shoulder troubles.
