Grand Slam champions Svetlana Kuznetsova and Serena Williams are set to compete on Saturday for a berth in the Kremlin Cup championship match.
The first semifinal of the day in Russia will feature Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina. Safina won their last meeting in May 2006 and holds a 2-1 record over her fellow countrywoman.
Following the all-Russian match, world No. 2 and top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova will attempt to defeat eight-time major winner Serena Williams for only the second time in her career. She walked away with her first win last week in the quarterfinals of Stuttgart’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix by thrashing Serena in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Serena stated after the match that she was not certain of what exactly went wrong, but knew her plethora of unforced errors cost her the win.
“I don’t quite know [what] went wrong out there,” Williams said. “I was spraying balls all over the place and just couldn’t find my rhythm.”
Tennis Channel will be airing live coverage of both semifinal matches beginning at 5:00 am ET.
