WTA Tour: ‘We do not believe that our sport has a corruption problem’

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour participated in a joint meeting on Friday with the International Tennis Federation, the ATP Tour, and the Grand Slam Committee to discuss the growing controversy of match-fixing and insider betting.

Although they clearly acknowledged that there is potential for corruption, they have “full confidence in the integrity of our sport.”

“While we do not believe that our sport has a corruption problem we do recognise that a threat to the integrity of tennis exists,” said the ruling leaders of tennis in a statement released to the media.

To deal with the threat, they will be calling on the assistance of an outside group to investigate the alleged incidents of players fixing matches.

“We believe that an independent situation analysis of this risk is necessary and intend to utilise external expertise to assist us in conducting this analysis.”
