Serena Williams found revenge against top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova today in Moscow, but her older sister Venus was not so fortunate across the globe in Bangkok, Thailand.
Venus was stunned for the second straight week by a lesser-ranked opponent in a tournament where she was one of the favorites to take home the title. Last Sunday she was defeated in the final of the AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships by Virginie Razzano of France, a player who has never reached the top 20.
Her conquerer today was Italian Flavia Pennetta, who has been in a slump for most of 2007. Venus bravely forced a tie break in the second set, but still slipped out of the tournament in the semifinals 6-4, 7-6(8).
Pennetta will play Taipei’s Chan Yung-Jan in the championship match tomorrow.
After losing last week in the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart to Kuznetsova, Serena Williams knew what she had to do differently to win today at the Kremlin Cup. Unlike her error-strewn performance in Germany, Williams advanced to her third final of the year in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-1.
Facing Serena in the final on Sunday is Elena Dementieva, who crushed Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-0 in the first semifinal of the day in Moscow.
