Serena Williams Latest to Qualify for WTA Championships

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has announced that former world number one and 2007 Australian Open champion Serena Williams is the latest player to qualify for the season-ending Championships in Madrid.

By virtue of reaching the final at last week’s Kremlin Cup, Williams accumulated enough points to secure the fifth berth into the event which begins on November 6.

“I’m delighted and surprised to have made it to the Sony Ericsson Championships,” Williams said in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s announcement.

“When I started the year, I honestly never thought I would be in the position I am in now with a Grand Slam title under my belt and getting closer to playing some great tennis. I thought I missed my chance by not playing this summer but I have been really excited to be playing in Europe the last few weeks and I made it sooner than I thought.”

World No. 1 Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Ana Ivanovic have already qualified, leaving only two more berths up for grabs.

Serena has not competed at the season-ending WTA Championships since 2004.

And Serena gets beat by Patty without winning one game. Sigh. If the injury is real, then she’ll just be the punching bag for the other women in the Round Robin matches. So much for defending her BLOG on wtatour’s website.

Good point Richard - Serena is going to be demolished in the round robin if she can’t move well.

Headed into the tournament, Henin is the overwhelming favorite to bring home the trophy. Her biggest opponent, Jankovic, is so exhausted that she’ll be lucky if she survives the round robin.
