Injured Serena Williams Retires in Zurich Open First Round

Only hours after filing her first blog entry at the WTA Tour website, Serena Williams has retired from the Zurich Open.

An injured Williams could not finish her first round match on Tuesday against Swiss favorite Patty Schnyder. Schnyder was leading 6-0, 3-0.

The official reason for her withdrawal is a sore right thigh. Her hip was heavily taped during Serena’s final on Sunday against Elena Dementieva, but said yesterday in her blog entry that she was feeling good.

“Can you believe that I’m playing my third event in a row,” wrote Williams. “I can’t! I don’t think I’ve ever done that in my career before, but I’m feeling good and determined to make a good run at the end of the year since I hardly played this summer.”

Venus Williams took a stint at blogging two weeks ago from the AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships. It was said to be the most successful blog ever on the Tour website, a distinction still likely to stand now that Serena is out of the tournament after only one day of blogging.
