Anna Chakvetadze overcame a lapse of concentration in the second set to reach the 2007 Sony Ericsson Championships semifinals on Thursday in Madrid.
Chakvetadze, who has been one of the most consistent players in the 2007 tennis season, outlasted a tired Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
The twenty year-old Russian appeared firmly in the driver’s seat in the opening set of the final match of the day in Madrid, only to falter in the second set. She successfully shrugged off her nerves in the deciding set against Jankovic and closed out the match on her first match point.
Chakvetadze’s win today against Jelena Jankovic allows her to finish the round robin with a 2-1 record, placing her in the semifinals alongside Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, and Ana Ivanovic.
