Jelena Jankovic became the latest player to retire from the 2007 Sony Ericsson Championships when she quit her final round robin match on Thursday against Marion Bartoli after contesting only eight games.
As both players were already eliminated from semifinal contention, increased ranking points and prize money were the only things at stake in today’s meeting.
Bartoli cruised in the opening set 6-1, and by the first set changeover, Jankovic was clearly having difficulty moving and breathing.
She wrote in her WTA Tour player blog last night that she was unwell and having trouble competing at a quality level.
“I’ve got a cold right now and my nose is stuffed up, which makes breathing difficult when I’m playing,” Jankovic said.
Bartoli concludes her Sony Ericsson Championship debut with a 1-1 record, with an exhausted Jankovic ending her season with a disappointing 0-3 showing in the tournament.

Jelena Jankovic is definitely out of gas.
Sharapova is pulling in lots of confidence with the serve, but as I mentioned, she probably doesn’t want Henin in the semifinal so she is probably happy to be the leader of her group.
Can’t wait for tomorrow!
