Madrid Wrap Up: Day Four at the Sony Ericsson Championships

MadridJelena Jankovic capped off her memorable 2007 season in an unmemorable way with a 0-3 finish at the Sony Ericsson Championships.

The past ten and a half months caught up with Jankovic on Friday in Madrid as the exhausted Serbian retired in her last round robin match against Marion Bartoli. Jankovic looked fragile, tired, and anxious to get some rest before the 2008 season kicks off in Australia.

Maria Sharapova proved that she is back and ready to be considered a serious contender at the top of the WTA Tour by cruising past Ana Ivanovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. By virtue of her win, Sharapova clinches the red group victory and will face Anna Chakvetadze in the semifinals on Saturday. Ana Ivanovic will play Justine Henin in the second semifinal.

After two years of trying Daniela Hantuchova finally won her first round robin match at the season-ending Championships. Hantuchova previously competed at the tournament in 2002, when the tournament utilized a traditional sudden-death format, but lost to Magdalene Maleeva in the first round.

Today in Madrid, Daniela grabbed her first Championships career win with a solid 7-6(7), 6-0 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Like Jankovic, Kuznetsova’s appearance in Madrid was far from successful, with the world No. 2 stumbling out of the tournament without winning a match.

Did You Know?

- Justine Henin will remain at No.1 regardless of her results this week, ensuring her third year-end No.1 and second in succession.

- Svetlana Kuznetsova will remain at No.2 unless Ana Ivanovic wins the title; Ivanovic will overtake current No.3 Jelena Jankovic if she reaches the final but remain at No.4 if she loses in Saturday’s semifinals.

- Current No.7 Anna Chakvetadze will return to the Top 5 at No.5 (pushing Serena Williams down on spot) unless Maria Sharapova wins the title, which case the 2004 Sony Ericsson champion will rise one spot to No.5.

Martina Says

About her surprising visit to Madrid and her cocaine investigation: “I’m sorry I cannot comment on the case for legal reasons. I’m just here to watch tennis tonight. I cannot say anything. Sorry.”
