Lindsay Davenport to Start 2008 Season at ASB Classic

Just over a week since she let it slip on her Sony Ericsson WTA Tour player blog, former world number one Lindsay Davenport has confirmed that she will be starting her 2008 tennis season at New Zealand’s ASB Classic.

Davenport participated as the Tour’s resident blogger during the Bell Challenge and stated on daily blog that she was planning to start the year in New Zealand. Shortly after the post was published the mention of New Zealand was removed.

Today, the ASB Classic has confirmed that Davenport will indeed begin her first full tennis season since the birth of her son Jagger at their tournament in Auckland.

“I’ve heard it’s a great tournament. I’m excited about coming down under and playing in that part of the world again,” Davenport said according to New Zealand’s Sportal.

“I’ve been to Auckland once and that was only for two days many years ago, so I definitely wanted to check out the city and play somewhere where I haven’t played before.”

Davenport gave birth to her first child, Jagger Jonathan Leach, in June. She played her first competitive match only six weeks later and went on to win two singles titles in the remainder of the 2007 season.
