World No. 3 Jelena Jankovic’s participation in the Australian Open is in doubt after she suffered a hamstring injury at the Hyundai Hopman Cup on Wednesday.

Jankovic, who is competing in Perth for Serbia alongside of Novak Djokovic, pulled her right hamstring in the first game of her singles match against France’s Tatiana Golovin.

“The injury is at the top of her hamstring,” said tournament director Paul McNamee according to the India Times. “We suspect it’s torn, but we won’t know the full extent of it until after the scan.

McNamee added that although Jankovic retired on Wednesday, she may still opt to play in the mixed doubles match for Serbia.

“She hasn’t pulled out of the mixed (doubles) yet but we’ll know more after the scan,” continued McNamee.

The 2008 Australian Open will be held January 14-28 in Melbourne.

The mere fact she’s still considering playing at all is stupid. She’s defending 345 points from Auckland-Sydney-Melbourne, which in the long run isn’t going to do her much harm at all, especially since her unused points would give her a top 40 rank….but still.

She has to think about Melbourne and her health. I hope she’ll be fine and can compete.

Chris I agree with you 100%. Watching that match, I couldn’t help but say to myself “this is why you are in the position you are in now!”. She should’ve pulled out of the mixed doubles. She injured herself more. I couldn’t even watch the match. And even though they won, it was still a bonehead move.

It was a fantastic match, and I really dont know why she kept on playing with a bumped leg, but she did…and she’s apparently still in and playing Sydney…
